This week I worked on photos in the style that Richard Avedon shot it. He shot his photos in such a way that he got 100% true emotion. He didn’t pose people or use props, but I did in some of them. I was going for the same type of photos he shot, but kind of twisted them into a way that the viewer would see my style also. I got some of what I was going for but then on some of them are pretty straight up average and some are pretty distinctively Avedon’s style and mine also. There were some photos That I shot that the subjects where wearing a greyish color of sweater or shirt so I didn’t use these because they didn’t turn out how I wanted them to and I really didn’t think that they were blog-worthy. The reason why they didn’t turn out how I would have liked them to is how I had the lighting set up. One side of the subject is a little blown out due to having the strobe power turned up too high. But witha black shirt or another dark color I wasn’t seeing this as much. With the grey colored sweatshirt it is quite distracting because you can not see the definition of the persons face and you can’t see the outline of an arm. So the photo turned out very washed out. I know what to do next time for sure. My inspiration was obviously Richard Avedon.

  1. Kate’s first shot absolutely just screams who she is at me… I can’t put my finger on why but it just does.

Now that I look at all 3 of her shots I’m starting to get a different side of her personality from each.

Props steve… its super tough to get that much true personality out of someone in a studio with just a white backdrop

Brandon’s first two shots are great but the third bothers me a little, I can’t see his face so i can’t seem to get the personality out of it. I may just need to look at it a little longer

    nice work

  2. Shut up Essex, you write like you know what you are talking about. :)

OK, my first reaction- these look over edited to me. Over sharpened to be specific. You mentioned in your right up about the exposure, that bugs me a little bit too- too contrasty.

Now onto the content of the photos. The three of Kate are very nice as is the last shot on your group (don’t know his name). These are in the style of what Avedon is known for, what I wanted you going for. You can see in the face of the person, in their eyes to be more specific, what they are feeling at that moment in time. The second one of Kate to be most specific- that is not a reaction that you can tell someone to do. “Look confused liek you have no idea what is going on and why you are having your photo taken!” This is not the expression that someone could really force. That one is nice, would be even better if the exposure was evened out a little.

    Keep going strong.

  3. I ♥ you!
